Secure Your Ledger® Wallet

The definitive guide to setting up your hardware wallet. Protect your assets with the industry standard in self-custody. Your digital wealth deserves the highest level of physical security.

Understanding Core Security Principles

Before initiating the setup process, it is paramount to grasp the fundamental concepts that make Ledger the most trusted name in hardware security. We focus on two immutable truths: the isolation of your private keys and the criticality of your 24-word Recovery Phrase. Your security is not a feature; it is the entire foundation of our product.

The Isolated Chip (SE)

Your Ledger device utilizes a Certified Secure Element (SE), the same chip technology used in high-security applications like passports and credit cards. This chip securely stores your private keys and cryptographically isolates them from your computer, smartphone, and the entire network. No software wallet or application can ever access your keys directly. This physical separation is the key to preventing online theft and malware attacks.

The Recovery Phrase

The 24-word Recovery Phrase (also known as the seed phrase or backup phrase) is the master key to your funds. It is generated by the device itself, never online, and is the only backup of your private keys. The Ledger device requires you to write this down *physically* and store it offline. **Never digitize it, photograph it, or type it into a computer.** Losing this phrase means permanent loss of access to your assets if your device is damaged.

Transaction Validation

Every single transaction must be physically verified and confirmed by you on the Ledger screen. This is a crucial defense against 'man-in-the-middle' attacks. When you send crypto, the device shows the recipient address and amount on its trusted display, and you must press the physical buttons to approve. If the details don't match, you do not approve. This step ensures that a hacker cannot secretly change the destination address without your knowledge.

Your Personal Setup Portal

To guide you through the initial setup and firmware updates, please create or log into your secure Ledger Manager account. This web portal helps you verify the authenticity of your device and download the correct Ledger Live application for secure connection. **Please note: Ledger Live is for managing your device, but your private keys *never* leave your hardware wallet.**

  • Securely link your device status.
  • Access genuine Ledger Live downloads.
  • Manage firmware updates safely.

Your 5-Step Ledger Setup Checklist

Follow these critical steps in the correct order to ensure maximum security for your Ledger device and the assets it protects. Do not skip any step, even if you feel you have completed it previously.

01

Power On & PIN Code

Connect your Ledger device to your computer via the provided USB cable. The device will power on automatically and display a welcome message. Your first task is to set up a strong PIN code. This code will be required every time you want to unlock your device. Choose a PIN of 4 to 8 digits. Use the buttons to select and confirm each digit. Avoid easily guessable combinations like '1234' or your birthday. The PIN acts as a local security layer against unauthorized physical access to your device.

02

Generate Recovery Phrase

The device will now prompt you to write down your 24-word Recovery Phrase. **This is the most critical part of the setup.** The words are displayed one by one. Use the provided Recovery Sheet to write them down, clearly and in the correct order. Do not skip this step. Do not take photos or store this phrase digitally. Your device will then ask you to confirm a few words, ensuring you have written them down correctly. This phrase is the key to recovery should your Ledger be lost, stolen, or destroyed.

03

Secure Storage of Phrase

Once you have your Recovery Phrase, place it in a safe, secure location. This location should be physically protected from fire, water, and theft. Consider a fireproof safe, a security deposit box, or other robust physical storage solutions. **Your Recovery Phrase is NOT a password; it is a direct key to your funds.** Anyone who possesses it can access and spend your cryptocurrency. This is why offline, secure storage is non-negotiable.

04

Install Ledger Live App

Download and install the official Ledger Live application from the link provided in the Setup Portal (Section 3). Ledger Live is your gateway to managing your assets, updating firmware, and installing crypto apps on your device. **Always download Ledger Live only from the official Ledger website to avoid phishing attempts.** Once installed, open the application and follow the on-screen prompts to connect your device and verify its authenticity.

05

Install Your First Apps

Using Ledger Live, you can now install the necessary cryptocurrency applications (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana) onto your hardware wallet. Each app allows your device to interact with that specific blockchain. After installation, create your first accounts within Ledger Live. Remember, the accounts are visible in Ledger Live, but the keys that control them remain safely locked inside your Ledger device at all times. Send a small test transaction to confirm everything is working correctly.

Advanced Security Considerations

Passphrase (25th Word)

For advanced users, Ledger supports a Passphrase, often called the 25th word. This adds another layer of security, creating a hidden wallet separate from your main 24-word recovery phrase. If a malicious party gains access to your 24-word phrase, they can only access the funds *not* protected by the Passphrase. This is a powerful, yet complex feature that requires extreme diligence in remembering the extra word. Only set this up after you are completely comfortable with the initial 24-word setup.

Phishing Awareness

Be constantly aware of phishing scams. Ledger will **NEVER** ask you for your 24-word Recovery Phrase via email, social media, phone, or any software interface. Any message asking for these words is a scam, regardless of how official it looks. Your Recovery Phrase is for hardware recovery only and must remain offline and secure. This vigilance is your final, human layer of defense.

Critical Safety Warnings

  • Warning: Lost Recovery Phrase

If you lose your Recovery Phrase, and your Ledger device breaks, your funds are permanently lost. No one, including Ledger support, can help you recover them.

  • Warning: Digital Storage

Storing your 24-word phrase in any digital format (cloud, email, text file, photo) immediately defeats the purpose of a hardware wallet and exposes you to hacking risks.

  • Warning: Supply Chain

Only purchase Ledger devices directly from the official Ledger website or authorized resellers. Never purchase a used or pre-owned device.
